Just two days ago, Kassim Osgood was released by the San Francisco 49ers in order to make room for Bubba Ventrone, but on Friday, Osgood was re-signed and is expected to suit up against the Rams in St. Louis this Sunday.

Third string quarterback Josh Johnson was released to make room for Osgood. According to CSN's Matt Maiocco, "the 49ers opted to release Osgood earlier in the week because they knew he would not get signed by any team." The Niners did not want to cut Johnson early in the week so that a team like the Rams would not be able to sign the QB and gather insight on the 49ers game plan and schemes.

This is the second time Johnson has been part of a transaction like this, late in the week. He was released when the Niners were going to need an extra tight end with Vernon Davis and Vance McDonald hurt leading up to week three and Xavier Grimble was signed off the practice squad.

The 49ers only have Colin Kaepernick and back-up Blaine Gabbert as the lone quarterbacks on the roster, which includes the practice squad. That could be reason enough for the Niners to possible make another roster move leading up to their week seven matchup against the Denver Broncos.

Osgood, a 12-year veteran and a well known and respected special teams player, "has appeared in four games for the 49ers this season, playing 69-of-107 special teams snaps (64.5 percent)," according to NBC Sports.

The 34-year old is in his second year with the Niners and has already been released and re-signed on three separate occasions since the end of training camp, in late August.
