Since the departure of Jim Harbaugh back to college, the San Francisco 49ers have been looking for a replacement and have been looking from the young, up and coming assistant coaches to the Super Bowl winning head coaches looking for another chance.

On Sunday, they will interview with another former head coach who is a prominent name in the NFL; former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, as Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported.

The 49ers, who parted ways with Jim Harbaugh after four successful seasons, were in three straight NFC Championships before this season and were the runners-up to the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII two years ago. San Francisco has a lot of solid talent on the roster with a top notch defense.

The 49ers have already interviewed defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and interviewed former Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan on New Year's Day; Shanahan is a former 49ers offensive coordinator from 1992-1994.

Ryan's best seasons as a head coach were his first two; in 2009 and 2010 when he went 9-7 and 11-5 and made two consecutive AFC Championship Games, but lost in each. Following then, the Jets failed to make the postseason in the next four seasons and was relieved of his coaching duties after the 2014 season following a 4-12 campaign in 2014.

Ryan also interviewed with ESPN last week regarding a possible television gig if he isn't able to land a head coaching job. Ryan also has an interview with the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday and is also drawing interest from the Buffalo Bills.
